Ohana Academy

Established in 2010, Ohana Academy has evolved from a small North London dance school with a single student into a vibrant community hub for the performing arts. Built on a foundation of fun, acceptance, and energy, the academy required a comprehensive rebrand to better reflect its growth and the deep connection it shares with its students.

It’s not what we teach, it’s how!

Having a long-standing association with the school, we were engaged to lead an expansive strategic and visual overhaul that would resonate with the existing community while positioning the academy for its next chapter.

The Challenge

The primary challenge was to expose the true essence of the brand that existed just underneath the surface. Ohana Academy is far more than a performing arts school; it serves as a daily reminder to connect with the wider community and to experience life through art, vibrancy, and fun. The existing visual presence needed to move away from generic, complicated ballet-centric imagery used by competitors and instead reflect a unique personality that is relatable, relatable, and deeply rooted in community values.

Our Strategic Approach

Our methodology involved uncovering the core personality of the brand, defined by four key attributes: Fun, Commitment, Community, and Kinetic energy. The strategic goal was to align this personality with a voice that speaks to students and parents with kindness, calmness, and confidence. By focusing on a genuine and transparent communication style, we created a strategy that serves as a visual and verbal bridge, ensuring existing students felt a sense of ownership and connection to the new identity as it was introduced.

The Solution

We developed an iconic visual identity designed to stand out across all digital and print touchpoints without the need for heavy adaptations.

  • The Visual Mark: The icon was born from discovering the link between the kinetic flexibility and dynamic movement shared by dance, performance, and yoga. This was simplified into a distinct, graphic shape that creates intrigue when standing alone and conveys clear meaning when paired with the wordmark.
  • Tone of Voice: We ensured the visual identity echoed the energy of the school, remaining friendly and relatable while maintaining a professional and confident edge.
  • Brand Separation: By avoiding obvious industry tropes, we crafted a unique signature for the academy that is easily distinguishable from competing performing arts studios.
  • Scalable Identity: The resulting system is resilient and versatile, moving seamlessly from small digital assets to large-scale print materials.

The Results

The result is a modern, kinetic brand identity that accurately reflects the "renovated" reality of the academy.

  • Alignment: The new brand successfully captures the vibrancy and fun that students experience daily, providing a clear and accurate first impression for new families.
  • Confidence: The professional yet approachable aesthetic inspires trust in the academy’s commitment to high-quality instruction and student well-being.
  • Market Standing: Ohana Academy is now positioned as a community hub for the arts, successfully differentiating itself through its unique philosophy and "how" it teaches.

"Clark&Waugh has been more than our design partner; they have acted as our brand guardian and a trusted member of our extended team. They have been invaluable to the process and the one constant on an ambitious project that occasionally had bumps along the road. We first worked with the team several years ago when we required show programmes, and the quality they produced was beautiful. When it can to our rebrand, we knew immediately that Clark&Waugh was the only agency we could trust to find the correct visual look that reflected the values so important to us. We are delighted with the results of the rebrand and are excited by what is now possible for us as a school."
